This is a part-time Sunday role focused on providing safe, reliable, and engaging childcare within a structured, policy-driven environment that prioritizes child protection and
community trust.
Provides safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate care for children (ages 1–5)during Sunday services and occasional church events, enabling parents to participate fully in church life.
- Schedule: Sundays, 9:30–11:30 a.m. (~2 hrs/week; 8–10 hrs/month)
- Compensation: starting at $20/hour (non-exempt)
- Reports to: Pastor & Personnel Committee
Core Responsibilities
Childcare & Engagement
- Supervise infants through age 5 in a safe, welcoming nursery environment
- Plan and lead age-appropriate activities (books, crafts, play, storytelling)
- Support children’s social, emotional, and self-care development
Safety & Supervision
- Maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment at all times
- Follow adult-to-child ratios and visibility/two-person safety practices
- Use positive guidance only; no physical discipline
- Ensure only authorized adults pick up children (secure check-in/out system)
Health & Hygiene
- Follow illness exclusion guidelines (e.g., fever, vomiting).
- Perform regular handwashing and sanitation of toys/surfaces
- Follow proper diapering/toileting procedures
- Monitor allergies and dietary restrictions
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain sign-in/out records and emergency contact information
- Communicate with parents regarding needs, concerns, or incidents
- Complete written incident reports as needed
- Report concerns immediately to the supervising staff
Facility & Team Support
- Set up and clean the nursery space before/after use
- Monitor supplies; report needs or safety concerns
- Collaborate with staff and volunteers
Safety & Compliance
- Comply with Washington State mandatory reporting laws
- Complete required background check (provided by church)
- Adhere to Bethel’s Safe Church and anti-harassment policies
- Follow emergency procedures (fire, evacuation, medical, lockdown)
- Participate in maintaining a two-person or open-visibility environment
Qualifications
- Minimum age: 18
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required; coursework in child development preferred
- Experience with infants/toddlers preferred
- CPR & First Aid certification (training provided if needed)
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of child development and safety practices
- Reliability and clear communication
- Ability to lift 25 lbs independently (50 lbs with assistance)
- Physical ability to move, bend, and actively engage with children
Training & Expectations
- Complete the required child safety and abuse prevention training
- Attend orientation and periodic refresher training
- Maintain consistent attendance; inform the pastor and arrange substitutes if needed
Additional Information
- Position is at-will and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion

- Church maintains liability insurance; adherence to policies is required
